The word Boipeba originates in Tupi Guarani Indian language, and means flat snake probably in reference to a type of turtle that can be found on the island.

Boipeba is one of the oldest sites of colonization of Brazil, founded in 1537 by the Jesuits. The island is formed by the villages of Old Boipeba, San Sebastian, and Moreré, and is inserted in Tinharé Archipelago which is an environmentally protected area (APA), composed of thirty-six islands.

The island has a rare natural beauty and different ecosystems as the Atlantic Forest, extensive mangrove forests and deserted beaches with white sand and blue sea. A true preserved paradise!

Boipeba is a place where the calm and quiet prevail, but there are some excellent options of activities that can be done such as boating or canoeing, hiking or horseback riding through the forests and beaches, diving and snorkeling in the natural pools, in addition to assessing the rich local culture visiting the ancient constructions of the village. Or marvel at the sunset, eat one of the typical dishes or participate the capoeira.
